Prolific sire and Group One-winning racehorse Selkirk has died aged 25.
The stallion, by Sharpen Up and out of Annie Edge, died on 3 January of old age.
Selkirk was bred and owned by George Strawbridge Jnr and stood at Lanwades Stud in Newmarket.
He won six races when in training with Ian Balding, including the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. He was joint champion first-season sire of Europe in 1997 and the leading British-based sire of 2002.
He never covered more than 100 mares in a season and has sired winners of more than 1,500 races, among them 45 Group victors, including Nahrain and Cityscape.
“I feel immensely privileged to have had Selkirk standing at Lanwades throughout his stud career,” said Kirsten Rausing from the stud.
“He was a wonderfully kind and co-operative character. We will greatly miss him, but his memory will live on, not only here at the stud, but throughout the Thoroughbred industry in this country and abroad.”
