Eric Lamaze unveils statue of Hickstead at Spruce Meadows

  • A memorial statue of Olympic gold medal-winning showjumper Hickstead has been unveiled at Spruce Meadows, Calgary.

Canadian showjumper Eric Lamaze unveiled the statue of his much-loved horse before the CN international Grand Prix at the Spruce Meadows Masters (Sunday 9 September).

Hickstead, who parterned Eric to individual gold and team silver at the Hong Kong Olympics in 2008, died suddenly while competing in Verona last November.

The 15-year-old stallion collapsed and died after just completing his round. He was found to have suffered an aortic rupture.

Hickstead was popular showjumper, especially at Spruce Meadows, Calgary, where he won the $1Million CN International last year and in 2007. During that event, he also won a record four Queen Elizabeth II Cup titles.
