All racehorses and staff escaped unhurt yesterday (Monday 3 September) after a fire broke out at trainer Luca Cumani’s yard.
Smoke was spotted coming from a section of stables at Cumani’s Bedford House yard on Bury Road in Newmarket at around 10.30am.
The horses were led from the stables by staff. No one was injured but the roof of the stables was destroyed.
More than 30 firefighters from Suffolk Fire and Rescue were needed to control the blaze.
Cumani has around 110 horses in training at the yard – including Mount Athos and Quest For Peace, who are being aimed at the Melbourne Cup.
Cumani tweeted yesterday to reassure everyone there was no serious damage.
“All horses and people are OK. Huge thanks to Suffolk Fire & Rescue for an incredibly quick response and effective action.”
An investigation is ongoing but it is not thought to be suspicious.
Cumani’s assistant Olly Williams added: “Thank goodness we got the horses out in time. If it had happened one hour later, no-one would have been there to get the horses out. Scary.”
