World Horse Welfare centre targeted by thieves

  • Thousands of pounds worth of farm equipment was taken from a World Horse Welfare centre in Somerset on Tuesday night (7 August).

Amongst the items stolen from the Glenda Spooner Farm rescue and rehoming centre were two strimmers, a mower, electric fence units and a muck grabber from the front of a tractor.

“The horses will be fine as luckily we still have everything we need to care for them,” said farm manager Claire Phillips.

“The biggest impact will be that the farm will look messy and untidy at the height of our busiest season for visitors. This is so disappointing as we take great pride in the high standards at our farms. I hope our visitors will understand.”

The centre was also targeted in March this year, when two feed trailers and two round feeders were stolen.

Since then security has been tightened. However the thieves on Tuesday night cut through the heavier locks, two sets of chains and broke into the barn.

World Horse Welfare is now planning to invest in CCTV and an alarm system to prevent future thefts.

If anyone has any information about the theft they should contact Avon and Somerset Police on 101.
