German showjumping team announced for London Olympics

  • A strong German showjumping team for London 2012 was announced at the weekend.

    The team will be:

    • Marcus Ehning with Plot Blue or Copin van de Broy
    • Christian Ahlmann on Codex One or Taloubet Z
    • Philipp Weishaupt with Monte Bellini
    • Janne-Friederike Meyer with Cellagon Lambrasco

Reserve is Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum with Bella Donna.

Marco Kutscher was the shock omission after a below-par performance in Aachen with the popular Cornet Obolensky, where the pair picked up 16 faults in Sunday’s (8 July) grand prix.

“This was the worst thing that could possibly have happened here happened,” said Marco. “But it is always a fine line with him – either he is top or it goes totally wrong.”

The team also suffered a blow last week when Ludger Beerbaum ruled himself and top horse Gotha FRH out of selection.

“The mare is simply not in shape,” he said. “Therefore, I am no longer available for participation at the Olympic Games.”

And Carsten-Otto Nagel withdrew his super mare Corradina before Aachen – which was the last chance to prove their Olympic worth – stating the mare had tooth problems.

The pair had previously won team gold at the World Equestrian Games in 2010 and European team gold in Madrid 2011.
