Firefighter rescues horse caught up in barbed wire

  • This horse had a lucky escape after trying to jump out of her field on Thursday night (12 April).

The bay mare was found lying on the grass verge, with her legs tangled in sheep fencing and barbed wire, by off-duty firefighter Ade Bell of Cudworth fire station.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service said crew manager Mr Bell was on his way home when he saw the horse on Blacker Lane in Shafton at 7.30pm.

He contacted the RSPCA and the fire service to attend and an engine from Cudworth station was quickly at the scene.

“The crews waited for the advice from a vet and the RSPCA before cutting the horse free,” said the spokesman.

“It was very lucky that the firefighter was passing. The horse has made a full recovery,” he added.
