Top British showjumper Ben Maher will be officially recognised for his contribution to the equestrian industry later this month.
On 16 April Ben will receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Essex, recommended by a partner of the university, Writtle College.
“As well as his record as an extremely talented horseman, Ben is a very personable and helpful individual who has trained and employed a number of Writtle College equine students over the past few years,” said Writtle College’s Emily Patel.
The doctorate will be presented in the college’s new indoor arena. Students, staff and visitors will then be able to enjoy a showjumping display from Ben following the ceremony.
“Ben has been very supportive of the college and its students in recent years and it is an honour to have a proactive Olympic athlete within our community,” Ms Patel added.
Ben has represented Britain on a number of occasions including the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2009 and 2011 European Championships.
