War Horse film preview: watch Joey on the red carpet

  • The crowds who flocked to the Odeon Leicester Square in London for the Royal premier of Steven Spielberg’s War Horse last night were treated to an appearance by Sultan, the “Joey” who galloped through the trenches in the film.

One of the 14 horses who played the central equine character of “Joey”, the bay Andalusian was escorted by Tom Cox of Daniel Naprous’s Devils Horsemen stunt riders.

Tom was dressed in an authentic World War I uniform, while Joey was wearing period military tack, including a horseshoe pouch (packed with two spare horseshoes and 12 nails), buckled onto the saddle.

Joey/Sultan was joined on the red carpet by director Steven Spielberg and lead actor Jeremy Irvine, who plays Albert. The premier was also attended by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who greeted the cast before watching the film.

War Horse goes on general release on Friday 13 January.
