Controversy surrounds hack championship at HOYS

  • After heading the large hack division, Marquis of Tavistock, a seven-year-old thoroughbred gelding bought out of racing, took the Topham Barnes hack title for his owner and rider John Keen.

However, as hacks are expected to display impeccable manners at all times, this result was not without controversy as the son of Averit became unsettled in both his class presentation and the championship award ceremony.

Taking the reserve was Leon King riding Pearl Underwood’s second placed large hack Wallaroo Bay.

The SEIB Search For A Star finals concluded today, the final classes adding another three names to Friday’s championship.

The eight-year-old Waroussia jumped a peach of a round to win the working hunter class for Sally Ann Needham. Sally Ann bought this attractive bay mare last October after seeing her competing in the show jumping ring with Liane Smith.

“I wanted a horse to give me confidence, and she looked a nice uncomplicated ride,” said Sally.

In the pony sections, Abbie Dark clinched the show hunter pony title riding her Irish-bred Goldun Conquest, while the eight-year-old Wyld Amethyst, ridden by Emma Shepherd was best show pony.

After finishing fourth in the Stennett Family large hack of the year final earlier in the day, Katie Jerram and Night Prayers won the popular SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse Championship. The nine-year-old ran seven times on the flat, winning once, before being bought from Steve Pitt.
