Success for equestrian London Marathon runners

  • Congratulations are in order for the thousands of runners who took to the streets on Sunday (17 April) for the 31st Virgin London Marathon — one of the hottest on record.

Many were running for an equestrian cause and have raised thousands for charity so far. But you can still sponsor them. Find out more

Among them was H&H photographer Trevor Meeks, 64, running his first marathon. He got round in 5hr 26min and has already raised over £1,000 more than his intended £2,000 target for the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research.

Jump jockey Leighton Aspell, running for Racing Welfare, completed in 3hr 29m and fellow Racing Welfare runner Bryan Elliott in 3hr 43m.

Simon Waterhouse, a partner for Newmarket Equine Hospital, finished in 4hr 7min in a Buzz Lightyear costume. Simon, who ran for Cancer Research UK and the Neuroblastoma Society is doing a double marathon challenge and is now gearing up for the Edinburgh marathon on 22 May.

Dressage rider Daniel Timson finished in 4hr 58min,

Daniel said: “It was a great day but so tough to run in the heat, which added an hour to the time I was hoping for so I’ll try again next year!”

And racehorse trainer Stef Higginscompleted in 5hr 34min, and the Pony Club’s Sarah Baker in 3hr 45m.

The Brooke supporter Jeannine Williamson completed in 4hr 32min, raising £1,500 for the charity.

“It was an absolutely incredible day,” she said. “This was my first full marathon so I had no idea what it would be like. But the sheer excitement of the day and the cheers from the crowd and people calling your name all help to get you round and make it totally unforgettable.”

Six ran for the Animal Health Trust (AHT).

Former showjumper Tim Gredley, from Newmarket completed in 3hr 49min.

“Growing up and living in an equine environment, the AHT is a charity that affects me personally. The charity improves the lives of thousands of animals and I hope the money I raise will help with this,” he said.

Louise and Terry Kinvig, two vets from Yorkshire, completed the marathon in 4hr 22min and 4hr 26min respectively.

Hannah Stickels finished in 5hr 54mins while Jamie Holmes completed in 5hrs 28mins.
