Horse & Hound readers are invited to take part in a survey to research where the UK’s 1.3m horses live, how often they travel, where they go and why.
The 28-month project was launched in January by Defra and the University of Glasgow, to help prepare for a possible outbreak of a serious infectious equine disease in the UK.
But more information is needed about equines used as leisure and lower level competition animals.
Dr Lisa Boden of Glasgow University said: “Only you can supply us with accurate and detailed information about the location and movements of the horses under your care and management.
“This information is vital for us to improve current prevention and control strategies for infectious diseases, such as African Horse Sickness, which could have a major impact on equine health welfare in Britain.”
Only one person per family should complete the questionnaire and all information will be kept confidential.
