Traditional ploughing match takes place in Cambridgeshire tomorrow

  • A ploughing match that has been running for 62 years takes place in Cambridgeshire tomorrow.

The Royston District Ploughing Match takes place on Saturday, 23 October outside Royston, near Cambridge.

Around 85 ploughmen will compete in modern, vintage, and horse-drawn ploughing, aiming to carve the neatest and most accurate furrows.

Royston Town Band, Morris dancers and free Jordans cereal bars will add to the excitement.

The event, sponsored by Jordans Cereals, has run since 1948. This year it will raise funds for The Prince’s Countryside Fund, which supports farmers and improves the long-term sustainability of the countryside.

Jordans Cereals helped to launch Conservation Grade ‘Nature-Friendly’ farming 25 years ago, and works with more than 50 farmers to turn 10% of their productive land into wildlife habitats.

The ploughing will take place between 9am and 1pm at Highfield Farm, Royston Road, Herfordshire SG89NJ, just off the A505 around 10 miles southwest of Cambridge.
