Fire destroys stable block at racehorse trainer’s yard

  • Fire has destroyed a stable block at racehorse trainer Michael Wigham’s yard in Newmarket.

The blaze broke out at Hamilton Stables at 7.32pm last night (Tuesday 28 July).

Eight horses had to be rescued from a quarantine block at the yard.

Currently the cause of the fire is unknown.

A spokesman for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said: “As far as we are aware no one — horses or humans — were injured. Our relief crews were there all night monitoring the incident to ensure another fire did not break out.

“We are investigating what started the fire, 90% of the wooden stable building was destroyed.”

Five crews — two from Newmarket and three from Cambridgeshire —attended the incident.
