Newmarket’s new equine hospital was officially opened yesterday (Wednesday 13 May) by Princess Haya of Jordan.
The Princess, who is the president of the FEI (International Equestrian Federation) and owner of last year’s Derby winner New Approach, toured the 15-acre site in Newmarket.
She also received a behind-the-scenes tour of the surgery suite which will be officially known as the HRH Princess Haya of Jordan Surgery Suite.
Newmarket Equine Hospital took in its first patients last September, and since then more than 500 surgeries have already been performed. More than 80 stables are available for in-patients.
The hospital contains advanced veterinary equipment including nuclear scintigraphy (bone scan) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and a dynamic respiratory endoscope.
The design of the main hospital building is an asymmetric cross with four wings – reception and offices, laboratory, diagnostics and theatres. There is a separate intensive care unit and an expanded diagnostic unit.
A floodlit 20x40m manege, hard and soft lunging areas and 2 trot-up runways have been built for examining lameness. There are also 2 x-ray suites as well as orthopaedic and soft tissue suites.
