A Merseyside Police horse has settled in well to his retirement at The Horse Trust.
Sixteen-year-old Sherwin arrived at the charity’s Home of Rest for Horses in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire at the end of January.
The Horse Trust’s Claire Lett said: “He has made some new friends and is enjoying his retirement.”
The grey gelding, who is also known by his force name Musketeer, could no longer be ridden after he was diagnosed with osteoarthritis.
During his 12-year career, Sherwin was involved in all operational police duties such as crowd control at football matches and patrolling Liverpool’s city centre in the evenings.
In 2005, he escorted the Liverpool football team on their parade following their victory in the Champions League.
The same year, Sherwin was one of four horses to lead Hedgehunter to the winner’s enclosure after his triumph in the Grand National.
Lindsay Gaven, stable manager for Merseyside Police, said: “There were lots of tears when he left.
“People loved him. They would come up and try to feed him doner kebabs.”
PC Ian Carmichael, who rode the horse for two years as a mounted officer for Merseyside Police, said he was delighted Sherwin would be spending his remaining years at the Trust.
“I took Sherwin to The Horse Trust and when I led him out of the horse box he was very keen to get to his new stable. I’m sure he is going to be very happy there,” he said.
