Horses taking their chances in the world’s most famous steeplechase, the Grand National, next year will be competing for a share in a record prize fund of £900,000.
The prize money for 2009 is up £100,000 on last year’s race, which was won by the David Pipe-trained Comply or Die, ridden by Timmy Murphy.
The 4 ½ mile race over 30 fences — including legendary obstacles The Chair and Becher’s Brook — will be run at Aintree Racecourse at 4.15pm on Saturday 4 April.
Julian Thick, managing director at Aintree, commented: “Aintree is proud to be able to increase the prize money.
“The generous support of John Smith’s has made this possible and since their sponsorship started in 2005 the value of the John Smith’s Grand National has risen from £600,000 to £900,000.”
