Former jump jockey victim of hit-and-run crash


  • A 51-year-old former jump jockey has died in a hit-and-run collision.

    Steve Wilson died in Walton Hospital, Liverpool, yesterday (22 December) following the incident on the A540 Parkgate Road in Saughall, Cheshire.

    Mr Wilson, who lived just a couple of minutes walk from the scene, was involved in a collision with a vehicle which did not stop on Saturday, 20 December.

    Mr Wilson started training as a jump jockey in 1972 , with David Gandolfo in Wantage, Oxfordshire.

    He rode in numerous races including on a winner at Fontwell in 1978.

    Mr Wilson, who never married, worked part-time as a cleaner at the Wheatsheaf pub in Saughall and as a litter picker in the village of Mollington.
