The Arab Racing Organisation (ARO) is launching a new Jockey Development Programme for amateur/unlicensed jockeys.
The programme, which will last for the duration of the 2009 season, aims to give young jockeys (aged 16-21) the opportunity to hone their racing skills in Arabian races before progressing to professional race-riding.
“We want to find good young jockeys and make sure they get proper opportunities,” said Georgina Tomkins, ARO’s director of racing. “They will all have a chance to race and be mentored by trainers.”
The ARO has already provided a training ground for top jockeys such as Tom Scudamore and Jim Culloty.
This programme is particularly targeting at jockeys who are too old for pony racing, or those needing more experience before riding under rules.
