Bewleys Berry retires from racing following serious leg injury

  • Leading Grand National contender Bewleys Berry has suffered a career-ending tendon injury.

The Howard Johhnson-trained chaser broke both flexor tendons during the Bet356 Gold Cup at Sandown on Saturday (26 April).

Bewleys Berry won four of his 19 starts for owners Graham and Andrea Wylie.

After coming second in Aintree’s Becher Chase in November last year, the 10-year-old was well fancied in this year’s Grand National but ran out of steam and finished in fifth place.

He is reportedly recovering well at Mr Johnson’s yard in County Durham although both his front legs are in casts. He will now be retired as a hack.
