An Horse & Hound reader has launched a petition to try to exempt privately owned horseboxes from Transport for London’s proposed Low Emission Zone (LEZ).
All vehicles over 3.5 tonnes inside the Greater London area face increased costs and hefty fines if they do not meet the Euro 3 standard on engine emissions by early 2008. (Read the full story here.)
“It will cost £200 to leave the yard,” said petitioner Adrian Daw, who transports his two horses in a lorry he built himself on a 1989 Mercedes chassis.
“There’s no economic way of converting an older lorry to modern standards. My lorry isn’t pretty, but it took me three years and a lot of blood, sweat and tears to build and it works well.”
