Tales from Tryon: ‘I don’t want to have to earn money from horses — I go to the stables and that’s my gift’
The achievements of the 24-year-old World Championship competitor are even more impressive because she is not a professional rider
The 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) are currently underway at Tryon in North Carolina, United States (11-23 September).
The Games had originally been allocated to Bromont in Canada by the FEI – and were due to be held from 12-26 August – but concerns around funding saw the event move south to its current location.
The date of the event was changed following scientific studies commissioned by the FEI, which showed climatic conditions to be “significantly more favourable” in North Carolina in September compared to August “particularly from a horse welfare perspective”. However, September is also hurricane season in the US and Hurricane Florence is currently on course to hit the state, although Tryon is some way in land and has a plan in place should the venue be adversely affected.
The World Equestrian Games takes place every four years, two years after the summer Olympics, and includes eight FEI disciplines: combined driving, dressage, endurance, eventing, para dressage, reining, showjumping, and vaulting.
The first WEG was held in Stockholm, Sweden in 1990. Kentucky WEG in 2010 was the first time the event had been held outside of Europe.
