Brian Hughes
Brian Hughes (born 27 June 1985) is a Northern Irish-born jockey who competes in National Hunt (jump) racing.
Brian won the British jump racing Champion Jockey title for the 2019–20 season with 141 winners. Hughes comes from County Armagh but is based in Carlton-in-Cleveland, North Yorkshire, and became the first champion jockey based in the North since Jonjo O’Neill won the title in 1980.
He looks set to become the 2021-22 champion jump jockey too, as he is currently over 50 winners clear of his nearest rival, with the championship year ending on the last day of April.
Brian has ridden a great number of winners for Donald McCain, with most of those coming in the 2021-22 season.
Brian has ridden over 1,400 winners during his career, but as he doesn’t tend to focus on riding ‘big race’ winners, instead preferring to focus on riding as many winners around the country as he can during the season, he so far only has three Cheltenham Festival winners to his name.
He is married to Luci and has two children, Rory and Olivia.
