Jumping world to celebrate life of Sylvia Rose Barnes

  • A legend in the world of show jumping, Sylvia Rose Barnes MBE passed away peacefully last Wednesday (28 May) aged 96.

Sylvia was one of show jumping’s most loyal and dedicated supporters, who has been described “as a legend in her own right”. She competed up to international level before getting married and bringing up four children, all of whom competed successfully in the sport.

After the children left home, Sylvia and her husband Gerald dedicated all their time to the sport. After Gerald’s death in 1981, Sylvia travelled up and down the country in her role as a judge and declaration officer at major events, such as Olympia and the Horse of the Year Show.

A service of thanksgiving is to be held at 3pm on Monday 9 June at St Mary’s Church, East Worldham.
