Find out who won the eight- and nine-year-old CCI4*-S at Burnham Market – and why the overnight leader lost her place…
Yasmin Ingham won the prestigious eight- and nine-year-old CCI4*-S class at Barefoot Retreats Burnham Market on Sue Davies and Janette Chin’s Banzai Du Loir, putting up an immaculate performance to finish on her dressage score of 22.3.
The 23-year-old said: “This horse gives me goosebumps, he’s so amazing. I was a bit down on my minute-markers [on the cross-country] to start with, but once he got on to the straight bits he just ate the ground up. He finds it so easy – I’ve just got to wrap him up in cotton wool now!”
Nine-year-old Banzai Du Loir, bought from France in the summer of 2019, went into cross-country in second place, but rose to the top when leaders Izzy Taylor and Hartacker slid past the corner fence at 14b.
“It was just a green mistake – he’s only eight, I was going quick and it was a big ask,” said Izzy, who won the CCI4*-L class on Monkeying Around.
Ros Canter took the runner-up spot on Lordships Graffalo, having added 0.4 of a time-fault in both the showjumping and the cross-country to her dressage score of 24.5. She was also fifth on Rehy Royal Diamond.
Third was Kitty King on Cristal Fontaine, clear inside the time across country.
“I’m thrilled with his performance in all three phases,” said Kitty. “He made the cross-country today feel really easy, which, considering it is his first CCI4*-S, is lovely and very exciting for the future. I can’t fault him – he hasn’t been out of the first three since we came out of lockdown.”
Tom McEwen was fifth on the attractive grey Bob Chaplin, a former ride of Paul Tapner’s, with 1.2 cross-country time-faults.
“He’s super-chilled and has more talent than you can shake a stick at – he just doesn’t always use it,” joked Tom, who was also 10th on Dreamaway II.
Izzy Taylor and Artful Trinity had a good prep run for Pau, finishing on their dressage score of 29.5 in sixth. The only other combination who added nothing to to their first-phase score were Phoebe Locke and Bellagio Declyange, eighth behind Samantha Lissington and Ricker Ridge Sooty GNZ.
