More than a million visitors are expected at the ancient Jerez Horse Fair in southern Spain, which runs from 13-20 May.
The Horse Fair of Jerez, dates back to the reign of Alfonso X The Wise more than 800 years ago, who granted Jerez the privilege of having two annual fairs.
The fair was originally a livestock market and has since expanded into a joyful celebration of the Spanish horse with more than 1,500 riders and 200 horse-drawncarriages expected to enjoy this colourful setting with gastronomy, sherry and flamenco all part of the flavour.
Now a major tourist attraction, the importance of horses in Jerez will be further supported when the city hosts the World Equestrian Games in 2002.
