Schoolgirl dies after suspected kick to head by her horse

  • A Scottish schoolgirl has died after apparently being kicked in the head by her horse last Sunday (27 February).

Lauren Bryant, 16, was found with serious head injuries at Duddingston Farm Stables in Newton, West Lothian, after she went to bring her horse, Solo, in from the field.

There were no witnesses to the accident, but people at the yard were alerted when they saw Solo galloping around the field.

Paramedics attended the scene, but Lauren died on the way to Queen Margaret’s Hospital in Dunfermline.

Solo was given to Lauren as a birthday present last year and connections said that he would never have deliberately hurt his owner.

The Irish-bred skewbald will now be looked after by Lauren’s aunt, Louise Tait, who runs the stables.

Lauren was said to have been a committed rider, who wanted to work with horses.

Friends at Linlithgow Academy, where Lauren went to school, are collecting money for disabled riders in her memory.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out, but a spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police confirmed that there were “no suspicious circumstances surrounding her death”.

Her funeral will be held on Friday (4 March) at St Michael’s Parish Church in Linlithgow.
