Prime Minister confirms free vote on Hunting Act repeal

  • David Cameron has reaffirmed his commitment to holding a free vote on whether to repeal the Hunting Act.

In an interview for BBC1’s Countryfile on Sunday (15 January), the Prime Minister said he thought the ban was a “pretty bizarre piece of legislation”.

He added: “I think there should be a free vote in the House of Commons.

“My problem has always been that it was just taking the criminal law into an area of activity where it didn’t really belong.”

It’s not clear when the vote would be held. The minister with responsibility for hunting, Jim Paice, has said it will happen “when there is time in the Parliamentary calendar”.

The programme can be viewed on www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer until 22 January.
