James Davenport, a member of Britain’s squad at the forthcoming young rider European SJ Championships, suffered a narrow escape at a recent show in northern Germany when a mini tornado ripped through the temporary stables.
James made a heroic attempt to save Enjoleuse De Laugrenee, who lay trapped beneath the debris of two stables. The fire brigade had to cut away the ironwork to free the trapped show jumper.
Enjoleuse was transferredto a nearby veterinary hospital where she was given a 50-50 chance of survival. More than 250 stitches were needed to repair lacerations to the mare’s legs and shoulder. Despite having plaster on all four legs, it is hoped that she will make a full recovery.
James’s other horses, Jamaica La Silla and his European Championship ride, Florie Du Moulin, also suffered minor injuries.
