Lightning strike kills horse and rider


  • A 23-year-old rider and horse have died after being struck by lightning in the USA.

    The pair were riding in Mississippi earlier this month (11 July) when the accident happened.

    Emergency services found the horse dead and the rider, Shannon Mosley, in cardiac arrest.

    Miss Mosley was taken to hospital and then moved to the Mississippi burn centre, where she later died.

    US police said there have been cases of horses killed by lightning strikes, but they are rare for humans.

    They warned riders who might get caught in a thunderstorms are being warned to stay away from open areas, water and tall, isolated trees and avoid anything that conducts electricity.

    Riders are also advised to check weather forecasts before heading out.
