Learn to play polo . . . and chill out

  • Ladies can learn to play polo and enjoy a relaxing afternoon at a local health spa with Antsy Polo Club

Ansty Polo Club near Salisbury, Wilts, has introduced a special women-only day out – a polo lesson, plus spa package to encourage more females to take up the male-dominated sport.

Ladies can enjoy an hour’s polo lesson followed by a champagne lunch and a relaxing afternoon at the neighbouring Retreat Day Spa, which offers a choice of treatments including massage, facial, manicure and pedicure, as well as use of the jacuzzi and sauna.

The club’s owners David and Kristin Heaton-Ellis introduced the package, in association with the Retreat Day Spa,in an attempt to open polo up to a wider audience.

“Many people feel that polo isn’t accessible but we want to prove that polo is an ideal way to enjoy the country air, have fun and relax with like-minded friends,” says Kristin.

The club has 27 polo ponies, ranging from quiet schoolmasters to high goal ponies and welcomes riders of all standards and ages. All new riders begin their lessons with David, who is a professional 2-goal player.

“All newcomers are assessed, while future lessons usually take place with other members of staff,” explains Kristin.

The new concept has proven to be a huge success, and the club has plans to introduce other day packages in the future.

“As the polo/spa package has proved so popular we are looking at other possible combined days including flying lessons at nearby Compton Abbas airfield.”
