How FMD has affected driving events

  • The Strongid-P Indoor Driving Championships Finals which were to take place at the College EC, Keysoe, Beds on 31 March-1 April have been postponed until the 24-25 November 2001.

“We feel that many people would not come if we held the finals asplanned,” said Dick Carey, chairman of the Indoor Driving Co. “Apart from acting responsibly at this dreadful time, we want the finals to be run at full strength.”

Half-a-dozen driving trials competitors, including four-in-hand drivers George Bowman and Karen Bassett, who were planning to compete in the Iberic Cup – international competitions in Spain and Portugal at the end of March – have withdrawn because of the epidemic.

The outdoor national driving trials season will now beginlater than usual with the Brighton event held at Stanmer Park in May cancelled.

The Windsor sponsored drive, which was scheduled for 8 April and takes place in Windsor Great Park, has also been cancelled.

Other driving events which have been cancelled due to foot and mouth include the London Harness Horse Parade, London – 16 April; St Fort, Newport on Tay, Fife, Scotland – 25-27 May; and Hopetoun House, South Queensferry, Lothian, Scotland – 1-3 June.

In terms of exercising and training, drivers have the same restrictions as riders in using bridlepaths and rights of way.
