A horse has been killed after being hit by a van in Hertfordshire.
The coloured horse had escaped from a nearby field onto the westbound carriageway of the A414 near Colney Heath.
It was then hit at speed by a white Ford Transit van.
Hertfordshire police were called at 7.54am and the road was closed back to Hatfield for several hours.
“We closed the road and the vet was seeing to the horse — it had been badly injured,” a spokesman from Hertfordshire Police said.
A spokesman from Hertfordshire County Council confirmed: “The horse died on the central reservation of the road after being hit by a van.”
