Four horses die in stable fire in East Herts

  • Four horses have died in a fire, after a suspected attempted burglary in East Hertfordshire went wrong.

The fire broke out at the yard in Bennington Road, Walkern at around 1.50am this morning (Wednesday 3 October).

Hertfordshire Police is investigating and appealing for information. The force believes thieves were trying to access a metal container next to the stables, which contained a quad bike, and that a fire started in the process.

“This is a very distressing incident and we are currently working with the fire service to establish the exact cause. A full police investigation is also underway,” said inspector Chris Hunt.

“Although the stables are in a remote location we are appealing to anyone who was in the area and saw anything suspicious to contact us immediately.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 or alternatively Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
