Farewell to…riding instructor Lorna Payne

  • A thanksgiving service for the life of riding instructor Lorna Payne will be held in Lambourn today.

Lorna – whose former pupils include Daisy Berkeley, Henrietta Knight and jockeys Michael and Richard Hills – died on 15 January, aged 93.

“Lorna was strict but patient and made riding fun,” Henrietta recalled.

“I was lucky enough to have had lessons from her as a child and rode several of her show ponies, even winning a class for her at the Bath and West in the 1950s.”

The service, at Church of the Sacred Heart, Lambourn, is being held today, 25 February at noon.
