Eventing foal takes top score at Writtle College Futurity

  • Three elite premiums were attained at yesterday’s (12 July) Baileys Horse Feeds/British Breeding/British Equestrian Federation (BEF) Futurity at Writtle College.

And the highest score of the day went to eventing foal DeCaw Diamond.

The colt foal is by the successful dressage stallion, Diamond Hit, out of the Irish Sports Horse mare, CAW Blimey, by the thoroughbred sire, Ring of Ford.

Owned and bred by Barbara Heaton Smith, he scored an impressive 9.18 in the eventing section, earning an elite premium and the top score of the day.

Barbara is college principal for the College of Animal Welfare providing veterinary nurse training, so CAW is incorporated into the names of her horses.

“I want to breed good event horses with more pace and I have been watching Diamond Hit for a while.

“The mare has very good paces anyway and I thought he would enhance this. We call the foal Bertie at home and he is very independent.

“He hardly seems to need his mother and is not worried about anything”, said Barbara, who intends to keep the horse and put him with a professional rider.

An elite premium also went to David Harding’s unnamed colt from Abbotsvale Stud. By Walentino out of the Golden Heights mare, Dares Pride, the colt earned a score of 9.04 in the eventing section.

Ferrero Gold also earned an elite Premium with a score of 9.04 in the dressage section for owner and breeder, Erik Belloy. The yearling colt is by the Hessen Warmblood sire, Flammengold, out of a Hannovarian mare, Freyer, by Friedensfuerst.

The top scoring dressage foal was Total Liberty, by Totilas out of Leibelei by Lanciano. This dark bay filly scored 8.93, just missing out on an elite score but taking a higher first premium for owner and breeder, Caroline Portnoi.

Top three-year-old of the day was Utrecht, by Udo Van Padhuis, out of Pintofields Delphine Gazelle by Davignon, bred by Mrs Suzy Mainprice.

The bay colt earned a score of 8.88 to take a higher first premium for owners Mr and Mrs Sherfield.
