On day one of the British Equestrian Federation (BEF) Futurity Evaluations at Hartpury yesterday, two Elite premiums were attained – with the day’s highest score going to the Hawtins Stud’s dressage foal, Hawtins Florizel (pictured).
Owned and bred by Judith Davis, the colt scored 9.09 and an Elite premium. The six-month-old is by the Florencio son Floriscount and out of a state premium mare, Lausanne by Laudabilis. Florizel’s damsire is a Hanoverian son of the thoroughbred sire, Lauries Crusader.
“Lausanne has produced 3 foals for us,” explained Judith. “She is very nicely put together with three good paces and Floriscount is a good match for her. He is big, with a lovely canter and known to produce leggy foals, which everyone wants. I was keen to use him and it was a case of looking to see which mare would suit him best.”
Hawtins Stud was established 11 years ago and now breeds a dozen or so foals a year.
“We breed and produce horses for dressage competition and I like to keep them and bring them on,” added Judith.
The success for Hawtins Stud didn’t end there. They also brought the highest scoring three-year-old of the day with Hawtins Sofia, by San Amour out of Cardinal Virtue, by Cardinar. The mare scored 8.71, earning a Higher First premium.
The day’s second highest score went to the eventing foal, Drossanne Highbury Miners Z, owned and bred by Elizabeth Childs. The foal, by Dick Z out of Polos Miners Gold by Miners Double, earned an Elite Premium with a score of 9.
Entries from across the disciplines scored well at Hartpury. The top showjumping score went to the two-year-old Cathago Chicago, by Silvester out of Call Girl, by Broadstone Chicago. He earned a Higher First premium with a score of 8.85 for owner and breeder, Hazel Offord – who also stands his sire.
The endurance section saw the three-year-old chestnut mare Peponi, by Krayaan Dilmun out of Zawadi, by Cloud Stepper, take the highest score with 8.26 and a First Premium for owner and breeder, Chris Wray.
