Devon vet rescued after being trapped beneath a horse

  • A vet who was trapped beneath a horse she was trying to help had to be rescued by fire fighters on Saturday.

The vet from Crediton, Devon, was called on Saturday evening to a farm near Hillerton Cross, to help a filly that had fallen into a ditch.

As the vet sedated the horse, it fell on top of her, trapping her against the hedge.

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue told H&H: “The horse didn’t have her full weight on the vet, and when we arrived we managed to pull the horse onto her side and the vet escaped unhurt.”

The vet then sedated the horse fully, and a neighbouring farmer was called to assist with his forklift truck.

“We passed strops round the horse and pulled her out of the ditch,” continued the spokesman, who added that the entire operation took several hours.

The filly — estimated to be around two years old — was then taken to a stable on the farm to recover.
