One of the UK’s leading Morgan studs is enjoying success in the show ring in America
A British Morgan stud is enjoying show ring success competing in the World Breed Championships America.
Monnington Stud in Herefordshire had become so disillusioned with low prices that their horses were fetching in the UK, that it took the decision to export seven to show and sell in USA.
“It was very frustrating knowing that we had championship stock and not being able to sell them,” says farm manager Trudy Connolly.
“We took two horses over to America last year and sold them both, so this year we decided to take seven with the intention of showing and selling them on.”
Escorted by the stud’s resident trainer Lionel Ferreira, two Morgans and five Saddlebreds were shipped to the USA to compete in their breed World Championships and then be sold.
The American trip has so far proved successful. At the recent World Saddelbred Championships in Kentucky, one of the Monnington Stud horses took reserve champion and two of the horses have already been sold, one of which went for $400,000.
Founded in 1975, Monnington Stud has firmly established itself at the forefront of British Morgan breeding.
The Morgan breed is renowned for its versatility and several of Monnington’s offspring have gone on to achieve international success in endurance and in the show ring.
