Blackpool’s working horses may have to wear ‘nappies’

  • BLACKPOOL’S landau horse drivers may be forced to fit nappies to their horses if councillors vote to bring in new rules.

If the plans; under discussion on Thursday; are approved, the 44 landaus licensed to work on the Promenade, will have to attach a dung-catching device to the carriage during the peak holiday season.

Members of the Landau Owners Association are opposed to the plan, saying the bags would be dangerous and uncomfortable for the horses.

The British Driving Society has also written to the council, saying: “Nappies are extremely detrimental to the welfare and safety of all harness horses.”

Equine nappies were trialled by horses in York in 2003 and are already used by horses in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.
