The exercise: walk onto a small circle

  • In today’s 20 minute workout we have an exercise to help you think forwards when riding downwards transitions.

    The exercise

Simply practice riding straight onto a small circle when you decrease the pace.

So when in trot, ask your horse to walk and, the moment the horse comes back to walk, ride a 10m circle – or even an 8m or 6m circle if you can.

By circling the horse, you prevent him from running on, and you’re more inclined to keep riding him forward into a good contact, rather than pulling back on the reins.

The exercise makes you keep thinking forwards as a rider even when you are decreasing the pace.
