“Riding ‘Ed’ full-time was very much an arrangement for the Olympics, and this decision has been on the cards for a while,” said William, who admitted there was some tension between him and owner Philip Adkins in Hong Kong. “He’s been a fantastic horse to ride and has been a valuable part of my team.”

William shared the ride on Parkmore Ed with Philip before this year, winning Burghley with him last year and finishing third at Blenheim in 2006.

Philip Adkins was not available to comment.
