Alice, who is a joint-master of the Surrey Union, only lost one “life” and therefore jumped in her shirt-sleeves (below). But Mike, who field masters for the Heythrop, was stripped to the waist by the final round, much to the amusement of the huge crowd.

Both winners had already jumped clear round the CCI*** cross-country earlier in the day.

Other gallant participants included Sam Butler, chairman of the Warwickshire, and Mike Lane, master and huntsman of the Atherstone, as well as the Bicester’s Lucy Holland riding side-saddle and the Pytchley’s Rowan Cope.
