Nicky Thompson, born near Guildford, Surrey in 1978 is a grade III paradressage rider.
When Nicky was 10 she was diagnosed with the inherited disease retinitis pigmentosa, causing progressive sight loss. Nicky has now lost central vision in both eyes and only has a small amount of peripheral vision which classifies her as blind.
Nicky began riding at eight and had her first pony, an ex-showjumper, by fourteen, with whom she competed at BSJA level.
As Nicky’s sight deteriorated she began dressage and bought her first dressage horse aged 22, joining the local Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA).
In 2009 Nicky attended her first paradressage competition and following continued success was awarded a place on the regional foundation squad.
By 2011 Nicky was competing at grade III paradressage and went on to join the World Class Potential Squad. Nicky and her horse Weit Santa Cruz (Ollie) are aiming for the London 2012 Games this summer.
