Richard Barrett’s grand prix dressage horse Alcatraz has been put down at the age of 19.
“He had uvitis [inflammation of the eye] and was blind,” explained Richard, “And he also had the onset of Cushing’s disease.
“It was very sad but he couldn’t go out and was getting very miserable, so I decided the decision should be made sooner rather than later.”
The gelding by El Corona out of a British-bred mare, had been with Richard and his wife Nicky, also a grand prix rider, for ten years and he belonged to Claire Bailey.
“He was such a good boy,” added Richard, “He was my first grand prix horse and I won two internationals on him, including the CDI at Hartpury in 2008.”
