Nick Skelton and Arko
Nick was forced into early retirement in 2001 after a bad fall at the Park Gate horse show in Cheshire. The top (C1) vertebrae in his neck was broken in two places.
Amazingly two years on, time had proved a great healer – the piece of bone re-attached and Nick was able to start to ride and compete again.
Nick and the brilliant stallion Arko have had an incredible 2003 which included helping Britain win the Nations cup at Hickstead with a classy clear round.
Arko’s achievements this year seen the BSJA award him a gold elite stallion status, joining only seven others in the top category and becoming a member of the World Class Performance Show Jumping Squad 2003.
