Britain’s Aram Gregory purchased the top priced horse of the 39th Vechta Special auction at the Oldenburg Horse Center in Germany last weekend. The liver chesnut gelding, Don Goliath, by Donnerschwee x Walldorf, was knocked down to Gregory for €45,000.
Gregory also purchased three other young potential Oldenburg stars: Dj Ötzi, a black gelding by Di Caprio for €23,000; Akurate, a grey gelding by Sandro Hit for €21,000 and Dorian Grey, a black gelding by Diamond Hit for €14,500.
The highest priced jumper in the sale, Lanzelot (by Landor S x Zeus) was bought for €23,000 Euro by a Spanish buyer. Foreign buyers were out in force for the sale which saw nearly half of the lots sold abroad. The 37 dressage horses and jumpers made an average price of €15,545 (£10,554), proving that it is still possible to grab a bargain overseas.
Oldenburger breed society president Wilhelm Weerda was extremely pleased with the results of the auction: “There were a considerable number of new customers, especially from abroad. That’s a sign that our increased engagement with cooperation partners in Spain, Poland, Italy and other countries is paying off,” he said.
