Welcome to our group test of fly sprays. All of the sprays in this group test have been put through their paces by dressage rider Jamie Broom and his wife Georgi, who run a busy livery and training yard near Windsor. Find out what they thought below.
Official description: Nettex standard fly repellent
While the warmer weather means longer periods in the saddle and more daylight hours to spend with your equine friends, horses have to cope with the irritating arrival of flies and other pesky biting insects. So help this summer to be a more pleasant one for your horses and ponies, by using Nettex standard fly repellent. This Deet-based spray contains added moisturisers and conditioners to help reduce evaporation, therefore helping to provide longer-lasting repellency.
First impressions
The branding was simple compared to the others and the bottle was also uncomplicated in design.
Overview of performance
This proved really effective against the midges and other annoying flies, but not so much against the horseflies. It lasted about eight hours before I needed to reapply it, but it struggled to keep the flies at bay at dusk when the flies were at their worst.
Georgi’s likes and dislikes
I like that the bottle is simple and easy to use with a good spray, while the screw top means that I can easy top it up. I would have liked it to be more effective against the horseflies.
Verdict
It’s a good-to-go, quick and easy-to-use fly spray.
