Andrew Tulloch will no longer be Event Director at Burghley, the Burghley Horse Trials Committee announced today.
Tulloch, who is also clerk of the course at Aintree and Cartmel, says he is leaving Burghley because the requirements of the role have changed. “The nature of the event, and indeed the role, is changing and I feel my time will be better spent concentrating on my positions within the horse racing industry.
“Naturally I am sad to have ended my association with this exceptional event and I was delighted to have had the opportunity of directing affairs, albeit for a short period.”
Tulloch only took up the Burghley role in April 2003. At the time, both Malcolm Wallace, Chairman of the Burghley Committee, and Charles Barnett, Managing Director of Aintree, thought that his racing and eventing positions would complement each other. “We feel that Andrew’s appointment [at Burghley] will dovetail extremely well with his position as clerk of the course at Aintree and Cartmel,” Barnett said.
Something has clearly changed since then, although neither the Burghley Committee nor Tulloch are willing to expand on the matter. “We are sorry to be losing Andrew’s services and thank him for his hard work over the past twelve months; we wish him well for the future,” says Wallace, who confirms that the committee will rethink the Event Director’s position.
However, the Burghley Committee have yet to define the details of the job. “I think the role still has to be reviewed,” says Burghley spokeswoman Candy Burnyeat. “There are no imminent plans to make an appointment at all or interview people for the job.”
