Britain’s Olympic and Paralympic medallists will be taking to the streets of London on Monday 18 October 2004 for a special celebration of Team GB’s achievements in Athens.
The medal winners’ parade is expected to begin at around 1.30pm and will conclude with a celebration in Trafalgar Square, although final details of the route are still to be confirmed.
The silver medal-winning eventing squad and the paralympic dressage squad are expected to attend alongside double gold medal winning runner Kelly Holmes, and four-time gold medal winning oarsman Matthew Pinsent.
Large screens in Trafalgar Square will show the parade in action, as well as highlights from the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Simon Clegg, Chief Executive of the British Olympic Association said: “We have been overwhelmed with requests for a Team GB parade in London and are delighted that, with the support of the Mayor of London, we can combine this parade with our colleagues from the British Paralympic Association.”
Phil Lane, Chief Executive for the British Paralympic Association said: “It is great news that there will be a joint parade celebrating the success of both our Olympians and Paralympians.
“Although our athletes have not yet begun competing at the 2004 Paralympic Games, we are confident that this is one of the best-prepared Paralympic teams ever to represent our country. We’re sure they will continue the wave of success and pride generated by Team GB in Athens last month.”
