Soviet Song and Attraction, the two fillies who have dominated the summer season’s headlines, are set to clash again in Ireland on Saturday when they meet in the Group 1 contest, the Coolmore Fusaichi Pegasus Matron Stakes.
Each of the fillies has been enjoying success in their own right this season, with the three-year-old Attraction winning the 1000 Guineas – her first outing of the season – in impressive fashion. She then revelled in two further Group 1 successes, the Irish 1000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.
The four-year-old Soviet Song, meanwhile, has stormed the racing world after proving something of a disappointment as a three-year-old last year. She has shown nothing but improvement this season, and has looked invincible since finishing second to Refuse to Bend at Royal Ascot in June.
She thrashed Attraction in the Falmouth Stakes at the Newmarket July meeting, and beat her male counterparts in an astonishing manner in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood.
Both fillies would prefer good ground, and may well not run in other conditions, but it is likely to be a well-backed contest, with both camps eager to determine superiority.
Rule of Law heads St Leger line-up
The Godolphin colt, Rule of Law, who finished a close second to North Light in the Derby, will take on the challenge of a 14-strong field in the St Leger at Doncaster on Saturday.
The three-year-old has produced some good performances throughout the summer, but has yet to hit the jackpot in a Group 1 contest, although the colt is said by connections to be in very good form, and he is currently firm favourite.
Several of the season’s Group 1 contenders will also be making a challenge in the 1m 61/2f race. With the distance a little further than many of the colts have yet attempted, the battle is far from decided.
Let the Lion Roar has been hotly tipped to improve on his third in the Derby. He was also a close second behind Rule of Law at York last month, a result which connections would be delighted to see reversed at Doncaster.
Jockeys sought for amateur race
The Countryside Alliance are calling for entrants to an invitation flat race over a mile and a half, which is to take place at the end of the official card at Plumpton on Monday October 4.
The event was a roaring success last year, with some of the participants never having ridden in a race before, one losing as much as 3 stone just in order to compete.
There are a maximum of 12 entries permitted in the race, and entrants are required to find a horse and raise a minimum of £500. Some local trainers have already offered horses for the race, but suitable enthusiastic riders are now sought.
